Kewin Descombes
Beaujolais, France
Operating on a foundation of organic farming with minimal intervention, KéKé, still in his twenties, stands unequivocally as one of the brightest emerging talents in the revitalized Beaujolais region.
Kewin Descombes, affectionately known as KéKé among his peers, is the son of the esteemed Georges Descombes, a prominent figure in the revered “Gang of Four” Alongside Marcel Lapierre, Jean-Paul Thévenet, and Jean Foillard, and sharing familial (half brother) ties with the remarkably gifted Damien Coquelet, KéKé’s trajectory in winemaking was seemingly predestined. His vinous creations seamlessly embody the poised charm, acidity, and elegance expected from such an illustrious heritage, boasting a sophistication, structural finesse, and self-assuredness that defy his youthful age.
The decision for KéKé to forge his own winemaking path, separate from the familial collaboration, stems from a two-fold rationale.
Firstly, the economic intricacies and administrative burdens associated with French inheritance laws posed considerable challenges. Secondly, the independence sought by Georges, Damien, and KéKé serves as a pragmatic measure to navigate the strong personalities within the family, ensuring harmony by avoiding potential conflicts.
His commitment to conscientious vineyard practices, spontaneous fermentation, semi-carbonic maceration, and minimal sulphur additions culminates in wines that, while echoing the teachings of his father, exhibit a unique style characterised by depth, masculinity, and an inherent drinkability. KéKé’s wines, noteworthy for their excellence in youth, also possess the aging potential to gracefully evolve over the years.
