Paddy Borthwick
Wairarapa, New Zealand
Paddy Borthwick Wines are testament to the enduring values of family, farming, and the art of winemaking.
Rooted in a rich lineage, their story begins with the pioneering spirit of Sir Thomas Borthwick, who revolutionized the English meat trade. In 1936, Paddy’s grandfather, PJ Borthwick, acquired Te Whanga Station, today a prized sheep and cattle station in Wairarapa.
Paddy’s recognition of Wairarapa’s perfect climate led to the establishment of Borthwick Wines in 1996, together with his father. Their vineyards cover 27 hectares of stony, free-draining alluvial soils near the Ruamahunga River. The microclimate, characterized by warm days, cool nights, and gentle rainfall, imparts unique qualities to their wines, showcasing the land’s character and exceptional quality.
Sustainability is at the forefront of Paddy’s approach, ensuring a lasting legacy for generations. With a hands-off approach in the vineyard and winery, he crafts precise, vibrant wines that reflect his dedication to excellence.
